After the crude oil is distilled, it is transferred to separate holding tanks for further treatment. A process known as cracking uses heat or a catalyst to break longer hydrocarbon chains into smaller pieces. Unification takes place when small hydrocarbon chains are reformed to make larger ones. Some of the hydrocarbons are altered on the molecular level to turn them into high octane hydrocarbons which are commonly used as gasoline additives.
At this point the fractions are chemically treated with different organic compounds in order to remove salts, tars and sulfur. The fractions can then be blended to form kerosene, diesel fuel and gasoline.
